Ranching and Life in the West

The romance of the ranch and the wild west lives on

Ranching Life Pictures and Prints from the American West

The iconic west, open range, rugged conditions and the love affair that we have with the independence that it represents. Dust, smoke and mist are favorite conditions of mine for making images. The backlight is a wonderful opportunity to show the complexity of the conditions surrounding ranching life.

Available as canvas prints, traditional prints (framed or unframed) or mounted on a wood panel. View the Working Horse Series.

Waitin Instructions From The Boss

Waitin Instructions From The Boss

Round-ups are common in the West where cattle are present.  Not all ranchers have wranglers on hand so neighbors fill in and help out. These three have been working cattle for more years than I can count and still love every minute of it!

This piece is one of the Round-Up series and is currently in the Club at the National Western Stock Show and part of the proceeds of the sale of this piece go to the National Western Scholarship Trust.

Please remember the print size is not the same as the framed piece.  Great for home or office decor. This unframed print also available in other sizes and with a framing option. Please see the Contact page for sizes, mediums, framing options and other info.

Waiting to Cross The River

The dust from the horses coming down from the hills and through the first corrals in the morning gives a diffuse quality to the light around them. Part of the proceeds of the sale of this piece go to the National Western Scholarship Trust.

Great for home or office decor. This unframed print also available in other sizes and with a framing option. Please contact me for pricing.

Morning at CM Ranch

Morning at the CM Ranch, second oldest continuously operating dude ranch in the State of Wyoming, is one of my favorites for dusty light. Like mist, dust gives a glow that cannot be replicated! The hush and warm expectation of the morning hang over this scene like the dust does.

Please remember that the print size is not the same as the framed size. This piece framed measures 26×20

Great for home or office decor. This unframed print also available in other sizes and with a framing option. Please see the Contact page for sizes, mediums, framing options and other info.

Buffalo In Spring Snow

Late spring snows often catch us by surprise in the West. Though I felt sorry for these buffalo when I saw them in the wet snow I realized that they were probably happy for the cooler weather on their thick coats.

This print is mounted on a wooden panel box and then coated with a UV protection that can be cleaned with a damp cloth. As with all of my work, various sizes and mediums, please inquire and I will be happy to work with you!

Cool Waters

Like crossing the street to go to work, these horses splash across the creek, headed to the corrals where they get fed, selected for riding and saddled up. Throughout this series the white horse seems to have been the lead horse and where she went the others followed. This is the third and final image in the Working Horse series that is hanging in the Club at the National Western Stock Show this year. Part of the proceeds of the sale of each piece goes to the National Western Scholarship Fund.

Please remember that the print size is different from the framed size. The framed piece measures 26×20

Good Morning Handsome

Morning at the ranch. A wrangler separating the horses to be ridden for the day from those that will have the day off. The moment of these two horses greeting each other was so touching.

Coaxing the Girls in from the Pasture

The second image in the Round-up series this year is an impressionists image of a rancher with a pail leading a small group of cattle from an outlying pasture to the adjacent one where the rest of the cattle are being moved towards the barns. I chose to slow everything down and make this image in the style of the Impressionists because of the theme, the light, the big sky and pastures as well as the time of year which just seemed to lend itself to the theme.

This image is one of the images featured in the Club at the National Western Stock Show. Part of the proceeds of the sale goes to the National Western Scholarship Fund.

Outcasts of the Round-up Framed Print

Part of the Round-Up Series, these two horses were shoed away from the back of the pick up truck where the cattle were feeding on “cake”. Their pouty expressions and demeanor was too funny to resist.

Walter Leads the Way

The beautiful backdrop of the Absaroka Range behind these wranglers. The only foot on the ground is one of the back feet of the dog, Walter, who is happy to be in the lead after chasing the horses across the pasture. Like the original photographs proving that horses didn’t have any hooves of the ground when they galloped, this is another proof positive that horses truly can fly!

This is a limited edition print.
